Running Back:

The Bills have Shady McCoy this year, but I thought he lost a little bit last year.  Chris Ivory was a good addition for depth but he and Shady both are approaching the tail end of their careers.  Travaris Cadet and Taiwan Jones were good signings for depth and special teams but I don’t see either one of them as the future bell cow back for the Bills. I think we need to draft one of the top Running Backs from the 2018 NFL Draft.  The Bills need a set of young legs in that backfield.  Here is my take on this years Running Backs! There are at least a dozen really good backs this year.

1) Saquon Barkley, Pa. St.-6’0″, 233 lbs.  The best running back prospect since OJ and the best prospect in this years draft.  He checks all the boxes.  Speed/Power/Stregth/Quickness/Kick Returns/Blocker/Receiver/Character/Leadership. Despite the need and greed for quarterbacks, Barkley will go in the first few picks.

2)Ronald Jones, USC, 5’11”, 205. I was surprised his 40 time of 4.65 secs wasn’t better.  He plays fast, I know that.  He runs tough inside and he will bounce out as well.  A good receiver.  Tough.  No issues.

3)Sony Michel, Ga., 5’11”, 214.  Another tough runner with speed.  Runs inside and out.  Has more game speed than his teammate Nick Chubb.  Those who watched the Championship series know how good he is.  4.54 sec 40.

4)Derrius Giuce, LSU, 5’101/2″, 222-More an inside runner but his 4.49 40 is very fast at 222lbs.  He has plenty of power.

5)Kerryon Johnson, Auburn, 5’111’2″, 212.  4.54 40.  Auburn literally jumped on this kids back and rode him into the ground this year.  A tough kid who played hurt.  Very slippery runner between the tackles.

6)Rashad Penny, San Diego St., 5’11”, 220.  4.46 40.  Another big back with great speed.  Had a great career with great stats at San Diego St.

6a)Royce Freeman,Ore, 5’11”, 229.  4.54 40.  6.90 3-cone.  A big power back with real speed and quickness.  Did well against all the teams out west.  One of the best backs in this draft.

7)Josh Adams, Notre Dame, 6’2″, 215.  A taller more uprights back like Adrian Peterson.  I really liked his play.  He carried the Notre Dame offense at times.

8) Nick Chubb, Ga., 5’11”, 228lbs.  The second half of the pony express backfield at Georgia this year but he was every bit as good as Sony Michel.  He appears totally recovered from his 3 ligament knee repair in 2015.  4.52 40.  29 reps.

9)Akrum Wadley, Iowa, 5″10″, 195.  A bit smaller but boy did he carry the load at Iowa the past two years.  Very elusive runner.  Tough.  Strong work ethic.  4.54 40.

10)Kalen Ballage, Az. St. 6’11/2″, 227. He jumps off the screen at times when I saw him play.  He did not have great years but I think he has great potential as an NFL back.  Catches the ball.  4.46 40.  6.91 3-cone.

11) Justin Jackson, NW, 6’0″, 199lbs.  4.50 40, 6.81 3-cone.  All time rushing leader at Northwestern.  Team leader.  Carried their offense.  lots of speed.

12)Martez Carter, Grambling, 5’8″, 205 lbs.  Quick scat back type quickness with surprising power.  Great receiver out of the backfield.  Will at the minimum be a package back in the league.

13)Phillip Lindsay, Colorado, 5’7″, 185 lbs.  Another scat back with great quickness and long speed.  All time leading rusher at Colorado.  4.39 40

14)Nyheim Hines, NC St., 5’9″, 198lbs.  4.38 40 with 6.85 3-cone.  Great speed. Another scat back with surprising power.  Will do well with punt and kick-off returns.

15)Ralph Webb, Vandy,  Webb is the all time leading rusher at Vandy.  He is quick and benches 400 lbs.

Chase Edmonds, Fordham; Bo Scarbrough, Alabama;Mark Walton, Miami; John Kelly, Tenn; Ito Smith, S. Miss; Roc Thomas, Jacksonville St.; Ryan Nall, Oreg. St. all could be drafted on the third day and looked good to me at times.

2018 Bills Draft Plan:  Barkley is the only real first rounder in my opinion.  Jones, Michel and Giuce could sneak into the first round, but I would feel they would be good value in the 2nd. round for the Bills.  I see Kerryon Johnson, Rashad Penney, Royce Freeman, Josh Adams, Nick Chubb, Akrum Wadley, Kalen Ballage, and Justin Jackson as Round 3 options.  There are multiple options above for a day 3 running back as well.  I would try and pick up one of these backs on day #2 with one of our 2nd or 3rd round picks.

2019 Draft Watch:  Bryce Love would have been the 2nd back chosen this year.  He should again be sensational at Stanford.  Damien Harris was very good at Alabama this year and should be better this year.

2020 Draft Watch:  AJ Dillon at BC is a Bowling Balls with wheels.

Will do Wide Receivers tomorrow if I can pull myself away from the Masters!
